 History of Flag Day

It is believed that Flag Day originally began in 1885 with B.J. Cigrand, a school teacher in Fredonia, Wisconsin to observe June 14th as "Flag Birthday."

Flag Day was officially established by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1917. He said, "The flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. The choices are ours; it speaks to us - speaks to us of the past, of the men and women who went before us - we celebrate the day of its birth."On August 3, 1949, President Truman signed on Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
