Veterans Day Salute: Honoring Those Who Have Served

11/9/2007

The Republican Party of Orange County regularly solicits the views and news of the state and federal delegation. Please read this week's Op-Ed by California State Senator Tom Harman

As a nation, we have expressed our gratitude to veterans each year since the first Armistice Day in memory of the end of World War I, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation renaming the holiday and expanding it to include veterans of two intervening battles, World War II and the Korean War.

"Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain," Eisenhower wrote.

Over the years, the celebration of Veterans Day has rightfully become one of our country's most important expressions of appreciation to those who have served in the armed forces.

Our military veterans have never shied away from defending our rights, our families and our way of life. They have followed honorably in the footsteps of the patriots who have preceded them in uniform– from Bunker Hill to Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Woods to Iwo Jima and Normandy – all to protect the rights that you and I enjoy.

I am constantly reminded of the vital role that California has historically and continues to play in providing a strong national defense. As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Defense and Aerospace Industry, I have the opportunity to look at ways to help support our military. One aspect is ensuring our state’s military bases are able to effectively carry out their missions; maintain a strong relationship with private sector industries; as well as ensuring that affordable housing is available to our men and women in uniform.

In addition, I am pleased to have authored and supported legislation that recognized the importance of our veterans. This year alone, we passed several measures that have authorized new funds for the construction of two new veteran’s homes; reduce or eliminate various fees for veterans, as well as increase available funds for the Cal-Vet Home Loan Program.

As an Army infantry veteran, I appreciate the sacrifices that our military personnel make at home and abroad safeguarding the liberty of the world’s greatest nation. I hope today, and everyday, you take the opportunity to stop and thank a Veteran. Fly the American Flag in their honor – at home, at work, and throughout our neighborhoods – not just today, but every day.
