Local Legislator Appointed To Committee On Water For Governor’s Special Session

10/4/2007

The Republican Party of Orange County regularly solicits the views and news of the state and federal delegation. Please read this week's Op-Ed by California State Assemblymember Bob Huff.

Assemblyman Bob Huff was appointed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez to serve on the Assembly’s Special Committee on Water yesterday.  The committee was formed for the special session called by Governor Schwarzenegger and will focus on finding solutions to avert a potential water crisis.

“Recent court rulings that limit how much water can be pumped from the Delta, the lack of adequate water storage and the current climate have created a perfect storm for a water crisis,” said Assemblyman Huff.  “The governor called a special session because we can’t debate this issue any longer – we need to act now.”

Thirty percent of the water used in Southern California comes through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  Twenty-five million Californians and five million acres of agriculture depend on it to deliver water.  However, the delta has been compromised as a reliable delivery system, increasing the urgency for the Legislature to act.

“For the past 40 years the state neglected building more water storage to keep pace with our growing population,” continued Huff.  “Now, more than ever, we need a comprehensive plan that includes money for water storage and to restore the Delta.  Anything else is irresponsible.”

California has passed $12 billion in so-called water bonds since 1988, but most of the money was hijacked by special interests and spent on  bureaucracy, government studies and environmental projects.  Huff  supports dedicating millions of dollars from Propositions 50, 84 and 1E to augment funding for these priorities.

“No surface storage, no deal,” said Huff.  “Water is our most critical resource.  Mandatory water rationing, higher water bills, more frequent and severe droughts and increased fire danger are very real threats if  we don’t secure funding for water storage and a reliable delivery  system.”

Assemblyman Bob Huff is Chairman of the Assembly Republican Caucus. He represents the 60th Assembly District which includes portions of San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange counties. He is also a member of the Assembly Health Committee, in addition to the Transportation, Budget and Education committees.  Any essays, opinion-editorials, press-releases or news item contained herein is the expressed view of the author and not necessarily of The Republican Party of Orange County (also known as OCGOP.org).
