Brief History At first no more than a way station built by Spanish missionaries for cattle herders, the city developed, as others did from the ashes of a failed land-development boom in the 1880's. Later it was to become an agricultural center, known for both apples and lima beans that in turn gave way to residential and commercial development. Today, the city is a focal point in the county, with the Orange County Performing Arts Center, South Coast Repertory Theater and the South Coast Plaza regional shopping mall and numerous nearby office buildings.(Previous information from Orange County.net) Annual Events Pet Expo - Costa Mesa General Law City Incorporated: June 29, 1953 Population (2000 Census): 108,724 (1990 Census: 96,357) Costa Mesa City Stats
